Stop in Birdhill, known for its parklands and public artworks. Enjoy a coffee or lunch at The Old Barracks or Matt the Threshers, or save your appetite for O'Brien's Bridge. Continue along the old Limerick road to a quiet back road, crossing the railway line and heading down to the river at Montpelier. Cross the river at O'Brien's Bridge and head off-road to the Parteen Weir. Choose between an access road or a footpath along the river to reach this engineering marvel. Marvel at the Parteen Weir, a testament to early 20th-century engineering. In the 1920s, a massive project split the Shannon in two, feeding a hydroelectric power station at Ardnacrusha. Enjoy great views up and downstream and appreciate the ambition of the times. Return through O'Brien's Bridge, with another opportunity for a coffee break at Nellie's, offering good coffee and tasty treats. Continue through County Clare to Bridgetown.
